Web App: Twittercal

This item was filed under [ web apps ]

Twittercal is a service that can connect a user’s Twitter account with their Google Calendar.

Features:

  • ability to add events to Google Calendar from any Twitter client
  • follow @gcal, the bot that processes and forwards messages to Google Calendar
  • add Google Calendar events by sending DM to @gcal

The Good:

Twittercal is a must have application for users who are devoted to Google Calendar. It is easy to use once you follow @gcal and complete the Google Calendar authorization process. After that, it’s as easy as sending a DM. On the technical front, Twittercal is a Ruby on Rails creature and the @gcal bot is powered by Java. Both are hosted on a dedicated server in France.

The Not-so-Good:

Twittercal makes a conscious point of not storing users’ passwords, which is good, but that means the service won’t work with a Google Apps hosted calendar. Probably not a big deal. Sometimes the whole process doesn’t “stick”, even though you may have followed @gcal and completed the Google Calendar authorization process. Repeat when necessary.
