Web App: Digsby

This item was filed under [ web apps ]

Digsby is a web app that allows users to manage IM, email and social networking accounts (including Twitter).

Features:

  • manage instant messaging accounts (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc.)
  • manage email accounts (Hotmail, Gmail, IMAP and POP)
  • manage social networking accounts, including Twitter
  • receive alerts and real time feeds
  • customized themes
  • privacy policy

The Good:

Digsby is a good application for managing a multitude of different communication tools. It handles IM and email very well and even provides a widget for blogs/websites. All the usual Twitter operations are supported. We liked the fact that Digsby appears to have a well thought out privacy policy.

The Not-so-Good:

While overall Digsby does a pretty good job of being the single UI you need to manage your networking communications, there were a few things that “bugged” us. We limited our focus to Twitter, and found that (1) we could receive tweets but our outbound tweets were not getting through, (2) there was no way to see who your friends/followers are, (3) there was no way to follow, (4) there was no way to easily re-tweet and (5) there was no way to keep track of your Twitter API rate status. We suspect Digsby is superb at handling IM and email, but the Twitter experience felt “stiff”.
