Web App: Tweleted

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

Tweleted is a web app that allows users to recover tweets after they have been deleted.

Features:

  • simple web UI requires only the entry of a Twitter username
  • search results display deleted tweets
  • ability to check if a tweet is actually deleted or merely temporarily “vanished”

The Good:

If you need to or want to find tweets that you know or think are “missing”, then Tweleted is a great tool to let you do that. It is easy to use and is an efficient search tool. We liked the ability to confirm if any of the displayed tweets are actually deleted.

The Not-so-Good:

No complaints, really. Tweleted is a capable search tool for finding lost tweets.

Web App: twitterex

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

twitterex is a web app that allows users to perform a search on Twitter and have the results display an extended version of any URL along with an “abstract” of its contents.

Features:

  • simple web UI requires only the entry of search terms
  • search results are displayed as a list of tweets with extended URLs and abstracts of their contents
  • avatars displayed along with tweets in search results

The Good:

twitterex is another tool that lets you search Twitter, with the added benefit of extending shrunken URLs and giving a short abstract of the content of the link.

The Not-so-Good:

While it is nice to have URLs extended, sometimes the abstracts weren’t available for display. Also, there is no indication of when the tweets were sent or by what Twitter client. Finally, hovering over the avatar shows you the link for the user’s Twitter account page, so there is no mechanism for following directly from twitterex.

Web App: TwitterSheep

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

TwitterSheep is a web app that allows users to analyze followers and generate a tag cloud to represent that analysis.

Features:

  • web UI requires only entry of a Twitter username
  • tag cloud is generated with more commonly shared tags emphasized
  • ability to tweet your results

The Good:

TwitterSheep is a novel way to analyze characteristics of followers, yielding a tag cloud as a visual representation. If you want to, you can tweet the results.

The Not-so-Good:

Not surprisingly, the largest tag on many tag clouds is “social” followed by “media”. “Me” is also in just about every tag cloud TwitterSheep generates. The graphical representation is clever, but we’re not sure what to do with it after that. Maybe it’s us…

Web App: TweepDiff

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

TweepDiff is a web app that allows users to compare the friends and followers of any two Twitter users.

Features:

  • web UI requires only the entry of two Twitter usernames to perform comparison
  • results display friends/followers of each user alone, and common friends/followers shared by both

The Good:

TweepDiff is a good tool for trying to find out who follows whom, and which friends/followers are shared. Avatars are displayed and drilling down will show details about each Twitter user, their last tweet and a link to their Twitter page. You can then decide if you would like to follow any of the folks displayed.

The Not-so-Good:

While TweepDiff does what its title suggests, and allows for comparison of the friends and followers of two Twitter users, it is rather light on instructions or background information.

** Since we first posted our review of TweepDiff, the developers have done an upgrade and added a “Learn More” link that goes into detail about the application and why one would want to use it. **

Web App: LoveTweet

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

LoveTweet is a web app that allows users to view a stream of tweets that feature the word “love”.

Features:

  • UI is a web page that streams tweets containing the word “love”
  • avatars displayed along with time of tweet

The Good:

Like all “stream of consciousness” twists on Twitter, LoveTweet has a certain addictive quality, and being sucked in by messages of love is probably better than gazing at tweets about refried beans. It is a pleasant distraction.

The Not-so-Good:

Like all “stream of consciousness” twists on Twitter, LoveTweet has a certain addictive quality. We said that already.

Web App: TweetPaste

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

TweetPaste is a web app that allows users to embed tweets into blog posts or web pages by copying and pasting a snippet of HTML.

Features:

  • simple web UI – grab tweet URL, click to convert to HTML and paste into blog
  • advanced configuration of resulting embedded tweet is available
  • embedded tweet can show avatar and method of tweet

The Good:

If you want to embed a tweet into your blog post as a true graphic representation of the tweet, then TweetPaste is a good tool for that. The process is simple, with just a few clicks and pastes to get the job done. The developers are also working on a WordPress plug-in.

The Not-so-Good:

We tried TweetPaste a few times, and sometimes it worked, and other times we got the error message “TweetPaste be broken”. Being broken is not good for business.

Plug-in: TwittyTunes

This item was filled under [ plug-ins ]

TwittyTunes is a Firefox extension that works with FoxyTunes that allows users to post currently playing songs to Twitter.

Features:

  • plug-in allows submission of “currently listening to” songs to Twitter
  • plug-in also allows for regular updates to Twitter as well as tweets about websites visited
  • character countdown
  • requires FoxyTunes in order to submit “currently playing music” to Twitter

The Good:

TwittyTunes functions well enough as a regular Twitter updater, with an added bonus of allowing you to submit tweets about music you are currently listening to on FoxyTunes. It isn’t fancy, but gets the job done.

The Not-so-Good:

The real purpose of TwittyTunes is to work with FoxyTunes. Beyond that it is functional, but its utility is limited. That’s not a problem, but it is something users should probably know before getting too excited about it.

Web App: twittearth

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

twittearth is a web app that allows users to view tweets from the Twitter public timeline displayed on a spinning globe.

Features:

  • view tweets from public timeline geo-located on a spinning globe
  • login with Twitter credentials and tweet from twittearth (your tweets show up more or less right away)

The Good:

twittearth provides an interesting representation of the Twitter public timeline, with a spinning globe showing night and day. Tweets are shown and the user represented by curious little icon/figurines. The entire effect can be rather mesmerizing.

The Not-so-Good:

Although tweets made from twittearth show up on the globe representation, during our test drive they did not actually go through to recipients or show in our own timeline. That was disappointing, to be sure. Also, huge time-wasting potential with twittearth. It’s cool to look at, but can be hard to leave alone. Hmmm.

Web App: twtrfrnd.com

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

twtrfrnd.com is a web app that allows users to find common followings between any two Twitter users.

Features:

  • simple web UI
  • find common followings between Twitter users and which people that one follows that follow the other
  • displays results in avatar grid

The Good:

If you are curious about someone who is following you, you can enter your username and theirs, and twtrfrnd.com will perform a search which will show (a) how many people you follow, (b) how many people they follow and who follow them, (c) the common group that both follow and (d) an indicators group of people you follow that follow the second entry. All of this will be displayed in an avatar grid. You can hover over an avatar to get the Twitter bio information for that user.

The Not-so-Good:

twtrfrnd.com puts up a lovely display, but we wonder mightily about its utility. Rather, we wonder what to do with the information it produces. It will certainly indicate any commonalities between you and the selected user. If you are looking for others to follow, it might be more useful to have a display for those that the other follows but you do not.

Web App: Tempo

This item was filled under [ web apps ]

Tempo is a time-tracking application that allows users to track time spent on projects and create reports based on a variety of criteria. One small part of it is the ability to tweet time reports back to Tempo.

Features:

  • enter Twitter ID into Tempo to enable tweeting feature
  • log time entries to Tempo by sending DM to @keeptempo

The Good:

If you or your company uses Tempo to track billable (or un-billable) time, then its Twitter integration is a great feature. All you need to do is send a DM with your time details to @keeptempo.

The Not-so-Good:

Tempo is much more than a Twitter tool, and the Twitter integration is just a small part of it. Tempo is a hardcore time tracking application. Look to it for that, not for any Twitter utility.
